Vehicle Description

This beautiful, original piece of rolling history comes from the Panton Collection. BSA offered the Super Rocket model for the performance-hungry United States market. The BSA Super Rocket was developed from the BSA Road Rocket with upgrades. The engine is 650 CC engine with a 4-speed transmission.
It was called the Super Rocket because it went like one. The last of BSA’s beloved pre-unit-construction twins was by far the fastest and sportiest of the whole line, before the factory modernized its twins with unit-construction crankcases in 1962. The A10 650cc engine first appeared in 1949 in a plunger frame as the Golden Flash, which predated Triumph’s 650cc Thunderbird by a year. The A10 was an enlarged version of its 500cc A7 model twin—BSA’s first postwar model in 1946—and it quickly gained a reputation for the solid reliability for which the factory was already famous. The bigger twin was equally reliable, although it didn’t have the rorty reputation of its rival Triumph and Norton twins. That would change with the introduction of the Road Rocket model of 1955, which had high-compression pistons and a hot camshaft for genuine “ton up” performance; it was tested at 109 MPH by “Motor Cycling” magazine. The Road Rocket was built primarily to satisfy the all-important American market, with 40 HP and an aluminum cylinder head. The two-wheeled arms race for ever more power and larger engine capacity ramped up further with Triumph’s introduction of the twin-carb Bonneville in 1959, with real 110-plus MPH performance and a land-speed record to boot.
